London School of Economics

Spearheaded by a radical professor there, the London School of Economics approached us to design an inspiring educational centre for their Information Resources Masters and PhD courses. The proposed department was situated within an existing 1960’s office block that the LSE had inherited - hardly a catalyst for innovative creative thinking.

Occupying three floors of the Mobil Towers our designs revolutionised working practices within the department. The space was dramatically opened up to instigate new ways of working, meeting, consulting and presenting. We created impromptu meeting spaces; a maple-wood enclosed departmental library; a living desk, a space-dividing mechanic that incorporated plants into its design. Some department office spaces were retained but in keeping with the open theme were kept glass-fronted, further uniting students and professors within a new studio environment. We subsequently designed two more floors and happily, the course has been over-subscribed ever since.
