Bethnal Green Road Apartments

We were asked to put together a proposal for the conversion of an existing industrial building into a mixed-use scheme comprising commercial space, a restaurant, a 28 room hotel and 7 apartments. This included the remodeling of the existing building interior, reconfiguring the facades and expanding the space at the rear for the new residential units.

The proposed elevation marries the traditional features of the existing building with a contemporary use of glazing and materials. The qualities of both old and new are emphasised through their contrasting character in the use of brick and cor-ten steel.

A key issue was the relationship between the building and the street at ground level. Access to the various uses is pronounced with projecting nodes which are treated with varying degrees of transparency relating to public and private uses. A green roof and planted garden are provided to the rear in order to improve air quality and enhance local biodiversity.
